Taqueria Tlaquepaque is a long-running Mexican restaurant at 721 Willow St, San Jose, CA 95125. It sits in the Willow Glen area, but the food feels rooted in Jalisco family cooking more than neighborhood trend chasing. The restaurant began as a simpler taqueria years ago and later grew into a full-service spot with a large menu, servers, and a loyal local crowd.

My meal felt relaxed from the moment I walked in. The room has a casual, family-restaurant mood: bright plates, warm salsa, tortillas on the table, and a steady mix of regulars, families, lunch guests, and takeout orders. It is not a tiny counter-only taqueria anymore, yet it keeps that comforting, unfussy spirit.

The menu is broad, so first-time guests may want to focus on the classics. Tacos are a smart place to begin. Al pastor brings marinated pork with a savory, lightly sweet bite. Carne asada gives grilled beef flavor, and carnitas adds a richer pork option. Chicken tacos with red sauce have also earned loyal praise from guests who return for that saucy, home-style flavor.

Burritos are another major draw. Regular burritos keep things simple with rice, beans, and pico de gallo, and super burritos add cheese and avocado for a fuller meal. Carne asada, al pastor, carnitas, chorizo, pollo, chile verde, shrimp, and vegetarian choices make the burrito lineup easy for groups with different cravings.

Beyond tacos and burritos, Taqueria Tlaquepaque has the range of a full Mexican restaurant. Quesadillas, tortas, seafood, soups, combination platters, breakfast plates, breakfast burritos, tamales, and Mexican-style steaks all appear across the menu. Steak Tlaquepaque, Bistec a la Mexicana, fajitas, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, menudo on weekends, mole, lengua, and birria give the place more depth than a basic taco stop.

The sauces deserve attention. Public restaurant profiles mention daily cooking, slow-simmered mole, fresh ingredients, and red enchilada sauce made with tomatoes, bell peppers, and chilies. That fits what I tasted: warm, balanced flavors that feel homemade rather than rushed. Chips and salsa also make a strong first impression before the main plates arrive.

The vibe is friendly, casual, and rooted in local history. Taqueria Tlaquepaque works for lunch, family dinner, breakfast, takeout, and a slow meal with plates to share. For a first visit, order super tacos, chicken enchiladas with red sauce, carne asada, chilaquiles, or a weekend menudo bowl. Add horchata, aguas frescas, or chips and salsa if you want a fuller table.

Order not ready when it was supposed to. First time ordering online. I would have appreciated honesty from the staff rather than having me wait. I could have cancelled the order and gone elsewhere. I love coming here. It’s unfortunate this happened to me today. I’m a bit disappointed. Wait time

Walked in and right away got seated. Medium busy. I came for a burrito after reading some reviews but on seeing the menu realized I would have the enchiladas Mexicanas. That is my usual go to for sit down places. They came quick and I dug in. They were great. I dont normally eat the dryer type, as most of my childhood was about the super saucy enchiladas, but they were delicious none the less. 3 enchiladas plate con rice and beans was very reasonable. paid a bit over 17.

The waitress and food was great! I ordered the camarones a diablo, spicy and flavorful. Would highly recommend the shrimp if you can handle the heat. My party also ordered tacos and birria. It was fantastic.
